Want to make more money?

Many of us do. Sometimes trying to figure out how can be a bit tough. The good thing is, you’re more talented and skilled than what you probably realise, and there are plenty of ways you can supplement your income. Here are some ideas to jump start your brain cells.

Ask for a raise

If you are currently employed, are you getting paid your worth? If not, then it might be a good time to ask for a raise. Do your due diligence first though – what is the market rate for your role in your industry, list out your achievements and prepare your spiel. Try to time it well too, like after you have delivered a successful project.

Online surveys, mystery shopping and cashback programs

These can be an easy and relatively painless way to make a little money on the side. Waiting for an appointment – use that time to fill out a survey! Going shopping – why not do a bit of shopping where you get paid at the same time? Buying something online or in store? Check out the apps first to see if you can get a discount, a little can add up to a lot over time.

Put your skills to work

One of the easiest ways is to draw on your strengths and skills. Can you take on consulting, part-time or freelance work within your area of expertise? Can you teach others on topics or things you’re an expert in? Perhaps you’re a writer, you can help companies to create content. Platforms like Fiverr and Airtasker can be pretty great at helping connecting people looking for your particular skills.

Capitalise on your hobbies

If you have a hobby that you love spend time doing, why not monetise it? Doing something you love and get paid for it? Yes, please! Like crafts? Why not sell your handmade goods on Etsy. Like meeting new people and driving? Why not drive for a rideshare service. Have a green thumb? Why not sell your amazing plants online.

Rent out your assets

If you have extra space, can you rent out your room? (If you are renting, it would pay to double check your lease agreement to check this is allowed!) If your car is just sitting idle, can you rent it out for the times you’re not using it? Have a carpark that you’re not using, or even equipment that you no longer need? Consider renting them out and make some $!

Learn new skills

Are there topics or skills that piques your interest and in demand? Put your spare time into use and upskill yourself. Here’s a list of the top 20 occupations that are in high demand in Australia as an example of some potential skill areas you can look at. https://ministers.dewr.gov.au/oconnor/new-data-top-20-occupations-demand

Investments

Make money while you’re sleeping. That has always been my ultimate goal for when I want to invest. If you have some disposable income (it doesn’t have to be much), consider investing so you can make money when you’re sleeping! There are many types of investment classes out there. When I first started, I started with a very small amount and put it into the shares. Of course, any investing always has its own risks so you need to consider what level of investing you’re comfortable with your risk profile in mind.

So here’s a short list to get you started.

Making money doesn’t always have to involve major changes. By looking at what is already in your life, you can leverage your skillset and resources to help. Like with many things in life, you have to start somewhere. Taking the first step is often the most challenging, but take that little step because it’s going to be a step in the direction that you want to go.
